Paradiene 20 is the first ply of Paradiene 20/30 Systems. The base ply is an elastomeric asphalt blend reinforced with a fiberglass mat that absorbs roof stresses, while the granule-surfaced top ply, Paradiene 30 or Parafor 30, shields the base from the elements and mechanical abuse. These high-performance modified bitumen base plies can be applied in approved Type III or Type IV asphalt, PA-1000 Polymer Asphalt, Siplast PA-311 Adhesives, or SFT Adhesive.

Paradiene 20/30 SBS-Modified Bitumen Membrane Systems

There are certain physical properties that high-quality SBS-modified bitumen membrane systems (e.g., Siplast Paradiene 20/30 system) have that help enable it to maintain performance over decades of service on a roof. It starts with the asphalt blend, which drives some of the physical requirements for long term performance. The reinforcement combined with the upper and lower layers of SBS-modified bitumen determine the primary physical properties and performance characteristics of the sheet. In other words, what Siplast does prior to and during manufacture of the Paradiene 20 and Paradiene 30 sheets is a huge part of what leads to the roof's potential long service life. Of course, the installation, the design, and maintenance of the roof also play a big role. Assuming that those aspects are handled properly, it is the SBS-modified bitumen formulation combined with the reinforcement (i.e., the roof membrane) that composes the backbone of the system that sets up the installed roofing system for long-term success.

    The Science Behind SBS-Modified Bitumen

Producing a high-quality SBS-modified bitumen membrane is a precise material science process built on four critical stages: raw material selection, formulation, manufacturing, and quality control. These steps are essential for achieving advanced properties like ultimate elongation and resilience to cyclic environmental stress, ensuring the membrane's superior performance and durability by defining the specific functional role of every component.

Waterproofing Membrane Types, Applications, and Best Practices

Waterproofing membranes help protect structures from water damage by creating a barrier against water infiltration. This makes them ideal for applications that involve higher levels of moisture due to environmental conditions or the presence of water, such as foundations, parking garages, and green roofs.

An Introduction to Air and Water-Resistive Barriers

Moisture management is perhaps the most perpetual damage function of a building enclosure, which is why air and water-resistive barriers are critically important. In moist and dry climate regions alike, if an enclosure fails to prevent bulk water intrusion or does not manage condensation risk, moisture can linger in an assembly, which can lead to failures like:

Unique Roofing Challenges: Smart Solutions to the Roof-to-Wall Transition

In the evolution of high-performance commercial building design, it's more important than ever to understand the role of the building enclosures. Since building and energy codes now require multiple continuous control layers to ensure and maintain building envelope integrity, the design of roof-to-wall transitions, in particular, presents unique challenges.

    Stormwater Management for Resilient Design

Urban flooding has become an increasingly frequent occurrence in recent years, prompting the need for effective stormwater management at commercial properties. In addition to the damage floods can cause, uncontrolled stormwater flow creates potential risks to individuals' health and well-being. If debris, pollutants, and trash are allowed to flow into drainage and sewer systems, this could ultimately end up contaminating local drinking water.

Compatibility of Roofing Materials: Why the Tape (and Every Layer) Matters

The compatibility of roofing materials and other building enclosures is a critically important issue. When it comes to building enclosures, especially roofing and waterproofing assemblies, the stakes are high. They need to hold up to water intrusion, temperature extremes, ultraviolet (UV) degradation, and wind uplift, and each assembly is only as strong as its weakest link.

Why Substrate Imperfections Matter in Roof Design

Specifiers and designers often focus on the visible components of a roof system: the membrane, the flashing, the aesthetic. However, the often-overlooked substrate—the foundation upon which the entire system rests—plays a profoundly critical role in long-term performance and durability. A long-term roofing system can only be achieved with a sound and suitable substrate.
